My students attend a low-income public school in Tennessee. They or someone very close to them is very invested in their education as they had to go through an application process to attend this school of choice. They struggle communicating with reading, writing, and math, but are able to express themselves well verbally. For example, in my World History class, my students become impassioned when debating issues like who should control Palestine, should President Nixon have been put on trial, and what makes an effective government, good people or a good system? Similarly, my economics students speak passionately about questions like is the US a free enterprise or a socialist economy and can government spending lead to increases in wealth? All of my students struggle with putting their thoughts down on. They already have the desire to learn, they just need high expectations, more resources, and a clear path to achieve. This is what will put them on a new trajectory.
