The children in my class crave attention and praise from adults. Many of them live in temporary housing or foster care situations. They sometimes travel from school to school faster than their record cards. They come from single parent, working families and spend many hours with baby sitters and older siblings. School is a safe, nurturing environment where they feel loved and can eat two meals a day. It takes them away from the stress of their daily lives and gives them opportunities to explore new things. They are learning to read, write, add and subtract but most importantly, they are learning how to be kind, considerate positive parts of society. For many school is the best part of their day.
