My students in Sun Valley, CA are Latino and are descended from the Maya and Aztec peoples of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and other Central American countries. In these countries, being of mostly native heritage is to open yourself to persecution and prejudice. Many of my students have very low self-esteem and need to be taught pride in their heritage. The Maya were a great people who built a civilization that rivaled even Rome. Pride of heritage is hard to instill in a people after centuries of persecution. These Maya studies are designed to give my students a sense of pride in both themselves and in their heritage. Many of their parents have always been curious about their heritage and become strongly involved in this project with their children as a vicarious way of learning about Maya Glyphs. This Codex project becomes the main topic of discussion at parent/teacher meetings. The parents of my student are elated that their children are learning about a past denied to them
