My sixth grade class is a mixture of many ethnic groups and nearly all are from low-economic status families. It is a self-contained classroom. I am responsible for all instruction except for music and PE. Sixth graders love either being in front of a camera or being behind one. Kids today are so media-savvy; they view the world through such a wide range of types of media, but rarely do they get to manipulate a media themselves. After twenty years of teaching I just know they will love using photography to inspire their writing and as an outlet for their creativity. I anticipate that while I can share with them the standard concepts of basic photography, they will likely have me seeing the world through their lens. It proves that it will be as enlightening for me as their learning the basic principles of photography. I grew up with 3 TV channels and no remote control. They have grown up with 200 channels, video games, music videos, laser shows and the list goes on. They see life in a different visual way.
