A strong foundation in technology and engineering is key to developing 21st-century skills. Students are familiar with 3D printers and having access to one in class will be a first for many of these students.
MakerBot replicator is a 3D printer that will help students to bring their engineering designs and models to life throughout the school year. I envision my students using this tool for everything from our engineering challenges throughout the year to creating models of their designs. Students will utilize the 3D printer in everything from designing vehicles to manufacturing manipulative items to help better understand difficult topics.
We will learn to use design programs and then learn the exciting techniques of 3D printing and the building of 3D machines. 3D printing includes so many of the Next Generation Science Standards. The core principles of the NGSS can be applied to the use of 3D printing in the classroom because 3D printing gives student the opportunity to be hands-on, create experiential artifact that gives students a deep understanding of the science behind how the world works. Some of these students have never seen a 3D printer in action, let alone experience the process of learning how to design and print.
