I teach at a large elementary school (enrollment is around 1200). It's located in Southern California in an economically depressed, high crime area. My class is comprised of 24 Kindergartners. They are Hispanic, primarily of Mexican background. They are the children of low-income families. Several live with their families in converted garages. They all qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Stability for them is more a commodity than a guarantee. Those are the cold facts on the surface. What's just as true is that my students have a palpable desire to learn. They enjoy school immensely and exude confidence and pride with each newly acquired skill. Did I mention they like to play? These 5 year olds thrive on each other's company. My goal is to build upon this comradery and afford them the tools and accessories conducive to self-learning and mastery of concepts in an entertaining and socially interactive context. My students have the motivation. Shall we let them play?
