Many of my students are just learning how to count. We enjoy counting with our fingers, but having lovely, colorful manipulatives will engage them on a whole other level. The neighborhood where I teach has a lot of students moving in and out of the surrounding apartment buildings due to changes in family income. The rents around here are some of the most affordable. For some families, living with extended family or other housemates also stretches thin family budgets, but still may not leave room for trips to the local zoo or city museums. Some families provide their children with soccer experiences or trips to the library, while many others have never been to school before and never used scissors or crayons, let alone a microscope. They are eager to learn and happy to come to school. Having a robust science and math center will build them into strong Kindergarteners next year, ready to take on the world!
