I teach 5th and 6th grade math and serve as the library media specialist in a very rural area where funding is often limited. Our school is 95% free and reduced lunch. Due to the low socioeconomic status of many of my students, life experiences are few. This leads to poor vocabularies; therefore, they are not strong readers. While our math scores are strong, reading scores are not. That being said, my goal is not only to improve our scores, but more importantly, to help my students develop a love for reading. Books can take them places and allow them to experience many things that they may never be able to do in person. I want to help my students become lifelong readers. I feel that if I can do this, the scores will take care of themselves.
