My students come from a low SES background where education is not always the first thing on the brain. They are active, creative and eager to learn. I have noticed the more we have tied learning to the real world, the more interested they are to learn new strategies on HOW TO READ!! Getting engaging material they are interested in is half the battle! Many of my students are reading below grade level and some don't even like to read. Having great resources help those readers enjoy reading. Our school is at 90% free and reduced lunch where many families are in survival mode. It is left to us to feed them not only nutritionally but educationally and emotionally.
