We are a high school with a about 3500 students in a large city in Illinois. The academic needs and levels of our students vary greatly as there is a large number of English Language Learners, students with special needs, and students who struggle academically. Our student population is about 80% Latino. Some of our students are White, Black, Asian,and Middle Eastern. 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch which is an indicator of higher poverty levels among our students. Our students have demonstrated a wide range of interests in terms of reading materials from sports to cooking to social issues to horror and romance. Many of our students come to our library knowing that we offer a variety of texts and media with which they can interact in order to engage their interests and strengthen their literacy skills.
