The student artists in my multi-cultural Brooklyn school are from fantastically diverse backgrounds, but don't seem to notice their differences. They love to share their varied experiences with one another. The feeling in my public city school is about as close to "Sesame Street" as you can get. Roughly 30% of my students come from some part of Asia, while more than 50% have a Hispanic background, and almost all are first generation Americans. A Title 1 school with a 100% free lunch student body, my students get VERY excited about technology, as many of them don't have the chance to use computers, especially at home. They are creative, excited and enthusiastic about anything new! Many of my students also have individualized needs. With almost 15% in special education, and more than 40% designated as English Language Learners, many of my artists crave/need extra visual support to enhance learning. Being able to use the latest technology will be such an exciting tool in the art room!
