My students are a diverse group of children coming from a host of countries and cultures. They speak many languages and have many different cultures. They also come from different socio-economic backgrounds. My students run the gamut from very well off, to middle class, to working poor and below. I believe compassion and tolerance are learned behaviors and that schools have a responsibility to reinforce these traits.
