My students are at-risk in more ways than one. They are faced with racism and classism every day of their lives. My students are predominantly Hispanic. Almost all have not yet become proficient in English. The entire school qualifies for free lunch. Our school is a large, 4,000-student high school in California that is going through a transformation due to extreme under-performance. I teach students with and without disabilities aged thirteen to eighteen. It is hard to gain their trust, but once you do they are strong, caring, special, and eager. They are basketball players, football players, boxers, soccer players, artists, designers, and writers. Some are parents, and some don't have parents. Most are not achieving their potential. They have many responsibilities at home and work. Some have learned to hate school because they have not experienced the pleasure that learning can bring. Many are hard workers who have been denied an education that is appropriate to their learning style.
