Our students come from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds. This diversity is reflected by the fact that there are nineteen languages spoken at our elementary school. As one might expect, my students are mostly second-language learners. They tend to be very shy, in part because they lack confidence in speaking English. There are many refugees among our student population, and this is their first exposure to a formal school setting.
