My students are a part of an urban school with great teachers but limited resources. The majority of the students are from low income families and homes, and beyond the stress of school, they deal with a lot of additional anxieties that arise from the neighborhoods they live in and their day to day lives. In addition to these challenges, my students are living with exceptional needs that complicate their ability to learn. They have little confidence in themselves and have experienced repeated failures and negative experiences with reading and school. Many of them are embarrassed at their struggles to decode basic words. They are a talented group who needs their reading fires lit, and their confidence boosted through encouragement and successful encounters with literature. They need exposure to their grade level materials integrated with work at their own reading level.
