I teach an 11th grade combined U.S. History and American Literature course in a large public high school in an urban center in California. My students come from a wide range of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, but are truly the sweetest, hardest working 11th graders you would ever meet. And by hard working, I mean hard working. I combine my history units with English units, so while we are covering a certain topic in history, we read a novel alongside it. This amounts to around 8 - 10 novels a school year, roughly a novel every two weeks with a written component at the end. But the students are always up for the challenge! It is such a pleasure to watch them grow as make incredible connections, comparisons and discoveries between the novels and the history they're doing. While it's a great deal of work, they almost always thank me come June. The first time it was a shock: students thanking me for a lot of work? But they always say that it makes them better people.
