My 4th graders attend a Title I school in a very poor town. Of the 103 students I have this year, 91 are on free/reduced lunch. Half are struggling to speak English. The parents are hard-working, but jobs have been lost and remain scarce. Two years ago our school stopped ordering the rotating science kits. These had been used instead of text books. Now, there are no resources for science. It is an expensive subject to teach. For the past year all of the science instruction has been based on what the children can see on a TV screen or from what I've been able to purchase for experiments at the local Wal-Mart. These young minds want to explore, create, and investigate. However, quite often they find themselves seated in front of a video or avidly watching their teacher because we just don't have materials for experiments and guided science instruction. Everyone cares about this situation, but reading and math require state testing, so these are where we focus our funds.
