There are many limitations in the classroom during COVID and one that will be heavily impacted in our classroom this year are small groups. Without the use of round, communal tables for small group learning this year, my students need a clean and socially distanced area to participate in small reading, writing, and math groups where they can interact with each other and the teacher in a low-ratio environment. With these surf lap desks and a new carpet that does not smell of must and mildew, my students will be able to engage in small instructional groups that are so critical to their learning, especially after a year of mostly remote school. While most of our classroom space is taken up with distanced desks all facing the same direction, this carpet area with portable desks will be a vital and necessary place in our room for the intimate learning that students have been missing for so long!
