I teach two third grade reading/writing classes in a high-need community. Many of our parents are unemployed and/or absent from the home. If they are present in the home, they are so consumed with work, bills, etc. that their main concerns are food and shelter, for their children(not schoolwork). We have around 40% ESL (English second language) students. We have an extremely high percentage of free/reduced lunch students, bordering on Title 1.
