I have twenty-nine 5th and 6th graders in my afternoon homeroom class. We are in a small, rural school district in the Willamette Valley. The majority of our students are on the free and reduced lunch program. They don't have many of the luxuries that most people expect in their everyday lives. I try to introduce my students to the world around them, a world most of them will never visit in person. Providing them with a vision of the many places they could go and how small our world really is can give them a drive to improve their lives. They can see there is more than just what they have in this small town. Most of our reference books are seriously outdated. We are working on a project now where the students are traveling around the world, visiting exotic cities and experiencing different cultures. They found out quickly that many of the places they were searching didn't exist in our old world atlas. I want them to experience having those maps in their hands, that's how they remember.
