My kindergarten students are amazing children, full of potential. Many of my students are English learners and they need opportunities to practice their language skills. Many of them come from low income homes and face challenges that many adults would find daunting. It is not uncommon to hear my students speaking of gunshots in the neighborhood, fighting adults, police at their homes, family members in jail, being hungry, etc. When they come to school I try to provide them with an environment where they get to experience safety, consistency, structure, and nurturing. What continually amazes me is that these 4 and 5 year olds immerse themselves in school and they work, learn, and play with such joy.
