Our school is located in a predominately Spanish speaking community in California. I work in a Title 1 school in which most of the children receive free or reduced lunch. Many of our families live in rooms or garages of other families. Our school provides an environment in which the students can grow intellectually, feel safe, and be nurtured. But most importantly, we provide a place of stability and consistency for children who lack it at home and need it the most. I teach 26 second grade students. 90% of them are English language learners. Most of my students speak Spanish at home. Vietnamese is the home language of 2 of my students. My class can be described as energetic and eager to learn. Most have made great growth in their academic skills. They love projects and hands-on activities. Speaking into the microphone is great fun for the students.
