I teach in an urban public K-8 school in Washington state. My students are moderately to severely disabled. The program takes an experiential, hands-on approach to learning independent, functional living skills critical to their future success. To fulfill these goals, my students need daily practice in the classroom with hands-on literacy activities. As students grow in this program, they will need to generalize their skills in the community, so teaching functional reading skills is a central focus of their literacy instruction. In addition, each student has their own learning style so I need to have a variety of activities to keep students engaged and eager to learn functional reading skills.
