First grade is a year of tremendous growth for the kids. I am so lucky to be one of their guides in this essential journey of learning how to read. I teach a diverse group of students at a public school in Ca. My students come from a wide rage of cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. In our classroom there are children of professors and entrepreneurs, children of construction workers, children of immigrants, and children whose parents are unemployed. Not only do their cultures and socio-economic backgrounds vary, but their reading abilities span across several grade levels. I have children who are reading chapter books at a third grade level, children who are still learning to recognize letters and letter sounds, and everything in between. Despite the differences in one another, all my students have cultivated a love of books, and understand the importance of becoming great readers. In our classroom we want to be surrounded by books and get lost in their imaginary worlds.
