My love of arts and crafts fed a desire to give students a creative outlet. I have long recruited students to help with the school's bulletin boards, cards for staff and students, school dance decor, pep rally signs, and anything else that was needed around the school. I pioneered a literary magazine course that showcased student writing and art eventually became a popular club on campus. The students craved opportunities to express themselves outside of a STEM-heavy curriculum and provide relief from the stress of academics at a competitive early college high school. To meet students' artistic needs, I personally purchased a Cricut, a die-cutting machine that cuts paper, vinyl, fabric, and leather. I started strategizing how to expand this opportunity so that all the students could benefit from a machine. The students and I brainstormed how this device could broaden their experience. Students saw the machines as a means to complete college projects, fundraise for clubs and classes, design logos and make stickers, and create portfolios for college applications, in addition, to helping them relax and de-stress. We are a relatively small school. Two Cricut machines and accessories would be ideal for student use. I would provide training to ensure the proper handling of the machines and to allow teachers to integrate art projects into their teaching. The rest of the materials are more a less a starter supply kit to launch our makerspace.
