I teach science at a middle school in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Los Angeles. We are a Green school, our mascot the California Condor, once brought back from extinction. My students come from houses and apartments surrounded by pavement, heat and smog. We just created, from seed, a community garden in an abandoned parking lot across the street from our school. We are slowing transforming the area into a cooler, healthier and more frequently visited area (by local city wildlife and humans as well). My 6th graders, now 7th graders will have gardening as an elective and I want them to be engaged in the wonderful story of Seedfolks that tells the unlikely triumph and beauty of a garden built in a city. They ask about the garden everyday and cannot wait to visit, tend their plants, make new paths and see new the new habitats for wildlife they have created. They are truly invested and many adults in the community stop by on a daily basis and ask how they can help us!
