My students are ELLs or English Language Learners ranging in level from 1 -5. A one is someone whose English is very poor while a 5 is a student whose conversational English is excellent but whose academic English is not very strong. They are in grades 4-6 and live in an urban environment where they may not always have enough food to eat, see violence and turmoil almost everyday and yet come to school with smiles on their faces. In fact, this is one school where attendance is not an issue. I believe it is because these students know that this is one of the safest and happiest place for them to be. Even when the weather is at its worst these students arrive and are ready to learn. I have many students who have just arrived from a foreign country and they are so eager to learn English and catch up to their peers. They want to succeed but are sometimes lacking the basics that other kids normally receive. Please help them, thank you.
