My students are eager readers who devour the materials provided to them, but their enthusiasm is even greater when they are given the ability to read topics that interest them. The school they attend is relatively small public school in California that teaches reading and writing through Reader's and Writers Workshop, which encourages students to choose reading at their level that interests them. Many students in my class have been begging to read non-fiction books, but to engage my readers who are hesitant to read non-fiction, I would like to provide them with a combination of expository, narrative, and multimedia (in this case, magazine) sources to light that spark of interest.
