Our school is really wonderful to help students achieve their academic goals, but is lacking in the special programs. We are expected as the regular classroom teachers to teach the special programs, like music and art, as well as the other curriculum areas. It becomes difficult because many teachers don't have training in these areas. Music falls to the wayside because teachers will just put on a CD and have the students sing to it. Although this covers the content needs, it leaves the children wanting different ways to experience music. I have a degree in musical theatre and feel that I would be able to enhance the current music program throughout our grade, and possibly the school, by becoming creative and inspiring the students, and also other teachers, to try different things. Think of the outcome! A community with classically involved members looking for ways to learn new and different things. These skills stay with the students for the rest of their lives!
