My students are eager first graders. I have a diverse population in my classroom. I have many non-English speaking parents, so their child is trying to make sense of two languages. A huge part of first grade is social skills. Children this age need to be specifically taught every social skill. Six year old children are very visual. They need to see what standing in line with their hands at their side looks like. It's even more meaningful if I can catch students in the "act" of making good choices and take their picture immediately. That picture goes on the bulletin board for the class to see as an example of a particular social skill. With my English language learners, a picture can show them instantly how that social skill "looks" without solely relying on language, which is often very confusing. First graders want to do well and behave appropriately. It has become very obvious to me that the same amount of time is needed to teach social skill as academics.
