My kindergarten classroom has 28 busy students. To keep them all engaged and continuously learning can sometimes be a challenge. Rotating centers is the perfect way to implement a listening center. Emergent readers need books read aloud to them as much as possible. The classroom has space challenges and I need a portable listening center that can be moved to the rug during our rotating center time. Students will work in small groups of 4-6 at a time to listen with headphones to follow words on the page of their own read-along picture book. The student's personal experience of listening to a story while looking at their own copy of the book will increase their engagement in learning to read immensely. Many of my kindergarteners do not have the opportunity to be read to at home. I want to inspire their love of books and increase the amount of time they hear stories read aloud every day. The portable rolling cart, tape/CD player, and headphones is a large expense that the school cannot afford, but is essential to creating a listening center. Also, the quality picture audio read-aloud book set is essential to group listening work. Every 1-2 students needs their own book to be able to read along with the words.
