I have a class of anywhere from 25-30 students in a poverty stricken portion of Phoenix. Many of my students come from a very low socioeconomic status. They have no parent support at home, and more often than not school is their safe place. My students are 7-8 years old and have experienced situations that many of us will never witness in our lifetimes. Many care of their siblings while parents/grandparents work, and others simply have to care for themselves due to lack of parenting. Regardless of their home lives, my students come to school everyday with a smile on their face and a positive outlook on learning.
