Self-regulation is a key skill for all learners and directly impacts how well a student is able to stay engaged within the classroom and across the school day. When students are struggling with their self-regulation skills at our school, they are able to access our regulation space, the Tigers' Den, as part of a skilled, short-term intervention. During this intervention, students are able to explore what self-regulating materials, routines, and activities best help them find their just-right, ready-to-learn zone of regulation. At the end of their intervention period, students and their teaching teams will have identified which tools are and are not helpful to them. The ultimate goal is for these tools to be carried over into their classroom so that they are able to incorporate them within the fabric of their school day. Self-directed exploration of regulating materials, routines, and activities is essential in determining what a student needs to find their green or just-right zone of regulation. Students complete this exploration with a skilled adult who is also modeling their own regulation routines or activities. Having a wide variety of regulating activities, routines, and materials is key to finding the right fit for each individual student. These materials can also be carried building-wide into students' classrooms and learning spaces so that their self-regulation successes can happen anywhere! We are asking for weighted blankets and lap pads, sit and move cushions, calming LEGO sets and mandala books, stress balls and timers, bouncy bands and Therabands, water bottles, and pencil grips. These materials will be used to serve hundreds of children across the entire school building so that they are able to get what they need out of their school experience each day.
