All students need tools to learn gross motor skills that are a part of their developmental make-up. Textbooks, paper, pencil, etc...are some of the necessary tools needed for children to be successful in the academic setting. But in the Physical Education setting, specifically the Adapted Physical Educational setting, my students need equipment that can be designed to be adaptable to meet the individual needs of each of my special needs students. This is even more crucial during these times of Distance Learning due to COVID-19. My students come alive with the simplest of things - chalk, balloons, beach balls, bean bags, bubbles, and pool noodles. Pool noodles are very versatile. They can be used as a striking tool or cut in half and used as a balance beam. Combine the pool noodle with a beach ball, bubbles, and balloons, and you have created a fun way to work on striking and eye-hand coordination. Bubbles, beach balls, and balloons can replace rubber playground balls or tennis balls that may cause damage if used indoors. They are also integral in learning skills for catching, kicking, rolling throwing, visual tracking, and more. Bean bags are great for throwing, catching, and balancing on body parts. Now let's talk chalk and its amazing versatility! Chalk can be used to draw boundaries, targets, start/stop lines, hopscotch courses, obstacle courses, line variations (horizontal, vertical, ellipses, curvy, jagged, etc), directionality, and more. All of the above functions of pieces of gross motor equipment needed in this Project also help develop midline crossing, reading, writing, vocabulary, problem-solving, motor planning, and motor coordination skills.
