In third grade, the need for technology, one on one, is great. We do IRead tests, ILearn tests, and NWEA tests, which are all on the computers. I want my class to get better prepared, but more importantly, to be used to what the computers offer. I love small groups, guided reading and math. This is when it would be most needed. I like having a computer station and a tablet station. The tablets are my old ones that they use, but the computers, well they are the schools. We only get a few that we have to share with three other rooms, and usually they don't work. The kids get frustrated and so do I trying each day to get them to work so the kids can get on. Having new Chromebooks that are ours to use in the room would help the students and I. I could set up bookmarks, update on the weekends or mornings if needed, and have a charger if they go dead. The kids could have them all day, so they can do more research projects that they love doing and play math games and reading games they enjoy. Last year, sharing the computers with other classes was hard because we couldn't get everyone equal time and the projects took too long. The kids loved looking up animals, planets, states, and holidays. Listening to read alouds in other languages was very beneficial to my EL students, and my general education students loved hearing the other language to show them how our non-English students felt. I would love to be able to print off things my students type right there. They could each have their own writing folder. The dreams are endless with computers in the room. A small group set is a great start.
