My students are brilliant, passionate, and wise beyond their years. They live in one of the most low-income neighborhoods of a large metropolitan area in California, and often encounter violence on their way to and from school. Their community, however, has a history of educating and caring for its children. My students continue this custom with one another, as they look out for each other both inside and outside of the classroom, supporting one another through academic and personal struggles. Many of them speak Spanish at home, and their parents may not be literate in English in order to help them with their homework. Additionally, many of their parents work long hours to provide for their families, and may not have the time for homework. Many of these students put their heart and soul into their studies, believing that they can accomplish their dreams and goals. Many others, however, have internalized the idea that they are not capable of succeeding within an academic environment.
