Through students having their own copies of Just Mercy to read at home, they will be able to do the reading beforehand and come to class prepared to discuss the material rather than doing the reading in class. This will leave more class time for discussion and learning. This book is written by a modern Black author who is on the forefront of the fight for justice and equality, and the book will provide the class with ample material for thoughtful and necessary conversations. With their own copies of this book, students will be able to annotate their texts as they go, improving their comprehension and understanding of how the author builds his arguments. This will help give them the necessary skills to pass the AP Language exam. It will also ensure that if we have to do remote learning again due to the pandemic, the students will all have access to a copy.
