These books will allow the students to step outside of themselves and examine the justice system and the circumstances that have led to their incarceration. This will lead to a better understanding of how to avoid future incarceration.
The books are authored by people who have been in their circumstances or have studied their situations. The goal is to build their self esteem and decision making ability through socially and culturally relevant texts.
For example, Chokehold by Paul Butler will teach them how to survive as young black men and women in America specifically focusing on police interactions and relations. Becoming Ms. Burton is an inspirational tale of a CNN Hero who overcame a lifetime of abuse and addiction to build shelters and transition homes for incarcerated women. A Stone of Hope by Jim St Germaine, a famous author who spent most of his adolescence in juvenile correction facilities. Every book on this list was written to inform and empower young black teens to overcome adversity to become productive American citizens. I have also included audio versions of the books because 90% of my students have learning or emotional disabilities and the audio books will help their learning and literacy skills.
