My students, 90 total, arrive to school early each and every morning, not because they are so excited to come to school, but because school is safer and more comforting than the low socioeconomic apartment complexes in which they live. My school, in Colorado, serves over 60% free-reduced lunch, and many families are coping with the aftermath of methamphetamine. Because life is a struggle, many of my students struggle in school and don't yet understand the importance of literacy and education. Within my classroom, they become a family. It is a place where I see them let their guard down, seek trust, and for the first time realize they have the power to choose their own paths and to do better and become better than the life they were born into. My students are my world; and despite the frustrations, I always remind myself that they are still children needing a chance, an opportunity, and I may be the only person who helps them realize their own potential.
