The materials I am seeking will allow my students to truly engage with lessons and content in a comfortable way that allows them to adapt to the environment. Students sit in uncomfortable chairs and at tables or desks for the majority of the day. I want my room to be an inviting environment. In particular, I'm requesting five stools, two lamps, a high table with an additional stool set, two bean bag chairs, and two exercise balls for students who may just prefer another form of seat for personal reasons or reasons that would help them to enhance their attention in class. Research shows that giving students choice in seating allows them to pick the best environment for their personal learning. Each of us is wired differently and not everyone can be successful in a chair at a desk. Other pros of flexible seating include burning excess energy, increased motivation, and better flow of oxygen to the brain. My classroom will prove to the students that the learning we do in the classroom isn't just for classroom use; it will be important in the real world. These flexible seating options will symbolize real world instances where learning and collaborating take place. I specifically chose a high table with stools to give students that coffee shop feel for writing conferences and book chats. I also requested two rugs and pillows to allow students to really engage with a good book in a more comfortable setting so that they associate reading with comfort and lifestyle rather than testing and school. This flexible seating arrangement will cater to my students individual needs, attention spans, and foster a comfortable learning environment. I intend to intertwine this with my classroom expectations so that students earn their right to choose where to sit.
