My classroom at Westwood High School in Memphis is a creative space where students learn by doing. I teach Photography, Theatre, and Film, so the room is always active. Some days students are planning photo shoots, sketching shot ideas, or analyzing images. Other days they’re experimenting with lighting, composition, and storytelling through pictures. Many of my students are beginners who have never used a real camera before. What they do have is curiosity and creativity. My job is to give them the tools and guidance to turn those ideas into something real. In our classroom, mistakes are part of the process. Students try things, adjust, and try again—just like real artists and photographers do. It’s a space where students build confidence, work together, and learn how to see the world in a new way. At Westwood, we believe creativity deserves a place to grow.
