We don't play enough games. The pressure to reach academic standards for our students have blinded us so much that sometimes we forget that strategy games like chess, checkers, Battleship and Connect Four can help aid us in building our student's critical thinking skills. As their critical thinking skills develop better in their everyday lives (outside of school)they then have a better success rate to apply those critical thinking skills in their Reading and in their Math. I am a 5th grade teacher in a Title 1 school. Most of my students our second language learners who are still in the process of mastering English. Many of their parents are hard at work leaving them little time to spend quality time with their children. Their parents depend and need us to help their children succeed.
