In the seven years I have worked at my school, I have never had a student who had to pay for school lunch. All my students live in extreme poverty. They are also all English language learners. They need instruction in both English and Spanish. Their families are supportive and do all they can for their children with the little they have. It is often very difficult for an immigrant family to navigate through the educational system, to find the best opportunities for their children, and truly become their child's advocate. However, we are lucky to be at a school where the relationships formed between families and teachers last beyond the year or two the child shares with the teacher. These students, who lack basic resources, will likely encounter many obstacles to achieving academic success in the future. We, parents and teachers, at this urban school in Texas work daily to change that.
