My 25 charming second graders attend a small public school in a diverse working-class neighborhood in Boston. My students are all English language learners who have recently arrived in the United States from other countries, including El Salvador, Colombia, Brazil, and Morocco. Though the task of mastering English while also learning reading, math, social studies, and science skills can prove challenging for my students, they are incredibly motivated learners who love every minute of school and often ask me hopefully if we will have school on Saturday or Sunday.
