My students are the best students in the world. I teach high school English/Language Arts. The majority of my students live below the poverty line and a large portion of my kids are currently a part of the foster-care system. Our school has traditionally under-performed most of our district but we're on the rise! This year, 23% of my students could pass the state test, which is a devastatingly low number and most of the students at our school read far below their grade-level. My specific students outperformed the entire school in our independent reading data because everyday I remind my students that reading and loving to read a lot is the one thing that can help the most with the state test and with all of their classes. Almost everyday my students remind me that I need to find them better books. They are not interested in what most mainstream teen literature is about.
