The students at my school are the children of Latino immigrants or immigrants themselves. Like virtually every ethnic immigrant group before them - Irish, Germans, Swedes, Italians - they have been drawn to America simply because they want a better life for their families. They hunger for success and education. They want to go to college and earn the degrees that will help them attain professional careers; they want to be engineers, doctors, business executives and all the other professions that young people everywhere typically aspire to. They are deeply respectful of their school and their teachers, and they are fully engaged in their education. For example, we have students who have won national scholarships to UCLA, Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara and other top-tier schools. We have a culinary arts program, a fashion design program, a green technology program that send students to the Culinary Arts Institute, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and other career colleges.
