They were excited and curious about the work, and as we read, discussed, analyzed, and engaged with his poems they became passionate about poetry. Students said things like, \"I never really got poetry before this,\" and, \"This poem is goated.\" One of the most meaningful comments I heard was that \"poetry is for everyone, and especially me.\" \r\n\r\nOur school has already been hit with its share of challenges. But our classroom has been a bright spot. Full of recognizing the reality, even while not accepting that it must be this way. \r\n\r\nMany students expressed how grateful they were to be able to actually write in the pages as they examined his words. Some artistically gifted students drew and added even more art to the page. Still others used sticky notes because they wanted to \"keep the book nice,\" but not just \"nice\" for future readers. They kept it pristine for themselves. \r\n\r\nIf every book we read could be gifted like this, I think it would change instruction all together. \r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students this poetry collection. It is an investment in their intellect and futures. \r\n\r\nAs I try to find a way to close this letter, what better way than to show one of (there were SO many) my students' favorites:\r\n\r\nMeteor Shower\r\n\r\nI read somewhere that meteor showers\r\nare almost always named after\r\n\r\nthe constellations from which\r\nthey originate. It's funny, I think,\r\n\r\nhow even the universe is telling us\r\nthat we can never get too far\r\n\r\nfrom the place that created us.\r\nHow there is always a streak of our past\r\n\r\ntrailing closely behind us\r\nlike a smattering of obstinate memories.\r\n\r\nEven when we enter a new atmosphere,\r\nbecome subsumed in flames, turn to dust,\r\n\r\nlose ourselves in the wind, and scatter\r\nthe surface of all that rests beneath us,\r\n\r\nwe bring a part of where we are from\r\nto every place we go.","fullyFundedDate":1784308604732,"projectUrl":"project/diversify-the-literary-canon-with-black/10350278/","projectTitle":"Diversify the Literary Canon with Black Poetry","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gray","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7412164_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1643246268773","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/msgray-teaches"},{"teacherId":9225134,"projectId":9136843,"letterContent":"I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to everyone who has supported the \"Project Planning for Success\" initiative. This project has been a remarkable journey, and I am thrilled to share that it has had a great impact on my students' organizational skills and academic performance. Student have used their planners to help them keep track of their assignments and deadlines as well as important dates. Some students also took these planners and are using them in their college journey to help them succeed.\r\nAdditionally the fidget toys and stress balls have been extremely popular and helpful when talking to my students about coping skills, stress managements and overall focus in their classes. Student now independently stop by whenever they are feeling stress int heir classes to ask for a stress ball or look at some of the fidget toys.
