Our intermediate school is a 6-8 school in the rural town of the Big Island. I am humbled every day by my students. One student left the Philippines when he was 5 years old. His dad is still there. His mom is raising 4 children and working two jobs. She leaves before he goes to school, and comes home after he goes to sleep. He has NEVER missed a homework assignment. He wants to join the air force as an engineer. He works incredibly hard every day to make that true. I owe him my hard work. Another student catches the Helion to get to school every day. The Helion is a public bus that goes around the island once every day. That means he gets to school 2 hours before the first bell. Every day, he is waiting at my door wanting tutoring. He is the reason I go to school early. He doesn't have the support at home. If he wanted to he could take a nap, or goof around outside. Instead he religiously comes in to work hard for 2 hours before school.
