My students are 6th grade ELL students who are currently reading below a 3rd grade reading level. An overwhelming majority of my students were born in the United States and have been in an ESL program for their entire academic careers! They speak perfect English but lack the reading and writing abilities to exit ESL. In order for my students to achieve their goals and aspirations they need to interact with on grade rigorous content and this will require learning skills they have yet to even be exposed to. They must be able to read and comprehend on grade text. 60% of the 50+ students I teach hope to one day become doctors. The rest dreaming of being teachers, police officers, firefighters, writers, artist, and military men/women. Regardless of their career paths, reading comprehension skills will be critical in achieving their goals. In order to be successful in college my students must also have strong critical thinking skills and be well organized (both with their supplies and ideas)
