My kindergarten students come from a high poverty school where the percentage of children receiving free or reduced meals lies in the lower 80's. Very few, if any, children have computers in their homes. Fewer still have ever seen or used an iPod. I have 4 computers in my classroom that children rotate through daily. I have an ancient tape player that serves as a "Listening Center". I am given funds to purchase instructional supplies at the beginning of each school year. The bulk of this money goes toward copy paper. I supplement the remaining money with personal funds in order to provide all students with crayons, pencils, scissors, backpacks, and other basic supplies. There is no money left over to purchase large items. My students never complain and are eager to make do with whatever is provided. I would love the opportunity to see the excitement that getting to use and iPod would spark in their learning.
